question on coin holders

Greetings, I have just recently become a registered user, but have enjoyed reading the forum for quite a while. I have a question about the air-tite coin holders which have a black gasket in them. they can be seen at apmex with this link;
http://www.apmex.com/Product/696/Air...t___32_mm.aspx
I have read in these forums that certain plastics, especially pvc can harm the appearance of coins stored in them, I am storing a 1oz eagle, buffalo and hopefully soon a maple in these containers. Does anyone think that long term storage with the soft rubber ring may be harmful?

I would like to know this as well. Currently, I have my gold coins in said holders.

Silver will straight-up tarnish from these rings. I cannot say that all rings fall prey to this caveat.

What about gold? Should I put my gold coins in the air-tites that do not have the ring? I didn't even think about this problem.

Fact: Most airtights aren't.

Makes sense.

BUT, which would cause the least amount of damage? Airtite with ring or Airtite with no ring?

I would not store my silver coins but the gold should not be a problem. Would look for exact size capsules without the insert. Maybe they are fine but I do not trust them.

It's the plasticizers (softeners) used in PVC products, particularly soft vinyl flips, that are known to damage coins over time.

Quote from Air-Tite Holders, Inc. website:

"Our holders are manufactured through the process of injection molding using virgin acrylic plastic that contains a non-yellowing agent, which helps maintain the clarity of the holders over time. The white or black ring/spacer material is produced from a cross linked polyethylene, which is a plastic material. The materials used in the production of our holders and rings are totally inert and PVC free."

Listen to this experienced GIM'er.

However if you must have them::yes:

I think AMOS.COM has coin and stamp supplies.

I know you can find them via "COIN WORLD MAGAZINES."

You really do not need holders for bullion coins; the tubes are fine.

Just "add" those SOFT PEANUTS to fill the voids in the tubes - that the shippers use in packaging almost everything.

I put these Maples in about a year and a half ago. Most are still looking good, but some do show slight spots, and I presume they will get more pronounced as time goes on.

what kind of spots exactly?

Re: question on coin holders

The spots are strange....you know when you breathe on a mirror or piece of glass and it leaves that little ring of condensation? They look like that, but tiny, and random. Some have one or two, some don't have any.

I put the Maples into the Air Tites with gloves, so there shouldn't have been anything coming into contact with them.

Are these the same Air Tites that APMEX sells? If so, I think I am going to swap mine out for the ones without the black ring in fear of the same thing happening with my gold coins.

Has anybody else experienced problems with the Air Tites with the black ring?

Woah, man, totally off-topic, dude, but... due to the perspective of Jekyll photo, it looks neat when I scroll this page up and down with the mouse wheel. Try it out!

people say that its the "plasticizers" in the plastic (even if its advertised as non-PVC) that causes yellowing. so, couldn't they use mylar plastic instead? doesn't mylar resist yellowing?

I would highly cardboard protected with mylar inserts::

Or these mylar containers:

Does anyone disagree?

"Plasticizers" are the compounds added as softeners, not the plastic itself. Acrylic is a plastic, but does not contain plasticizers.

Most safety flips are OK. Air-tites are OK (with or without ring). Cardboard/Mylar "fold-and-staple" holders are questionable IMO. The Mylar is safe, but the dust from the cardboad may be a problem over the long run.

Re: question on coin holders

Air-tites will not harm gold coins. I doubt they even harm silver ones, it's the aforementioned lack of air-tightness that likely causes problems. With gold (or palladium/platinum) this is a non-issue.
